Tutorial part 5 by ChristopherStevens Tutorial part 5 by ChristopherStevens
5. My favorite part. I break out the watercolor and color pencils.

On this piece, I went straight to solid opaque white paint. Started adding the highlights to his helmet and shield. There's some diluted blending started here too where I've done some texture work on the shield and some subtle work on his face.

I chose to use the color pencil on his skin this time. I usually try to avoid that since I don't want the texture to be too heavy, but I wanted some subtle highlighting/rendering and it's just easier for me to do with color pencil instead of paint.

I've started adding a bunch of rendering and detail to the leather straps and axe handle too. All of that is with color pencil as is all the rendering on his foot.

Could you use white color pencil for in place of paint, or does it not work that way? Ive never done anything like this.

Absolutely. Color pencil works too. Though, it obviously can't get solid white, it's still very good for rendering or just adding a bit of texture to things like rocks or jeans.

Thanks for the time you put to do this tut. I hope whatever goes around, comes around - your way :)
Thanks again for the effort - I never imagined you could blend and texturise with white colour pencil that way, I always thought it was markers all the way! :D Great stuff!

that burnished/beaten texture to the shield is quite exquisite. :)

Hey Chris, when you say white paint, you mean white opaque watercolor?
Man, the insight is awesome!

Yeah, it's Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White. A liquid watercolor that comes in a little jar.

Thanks!
