The Rocketeer small by ChristopherStevens The Rocketeer small by ChristopherStevens
My first Rocketeer piece. He's got a great design that I hope to revisit some day.

Thanks. I'm a big statue guy. I think that rubs off onto my work as I tend to design pieces that look like statue designs.

I have been painting. Not as much as I'd like, but I will have new pieces to share down the road. Thanks for asking!

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!

What have you been working on lately? Where can we find more of your work?
Also did I read right you're the co-creator of Skullkickers?

Thanks. Commissions. I get a lot of enjoyment out of commissions, so I've stuck with them.

Yeah, me and Jim Zubkavich. He's working hard to keep those rascals going.

That is very very cool.

I'm not asking to pry, so please feel free to ignore the question but are you able to do commissions as your full time income source?
Also, do you think you'd put out another Sketchbook in the future? I loved your first one. Thank you.

Yeah, commissions are pretty much my full time gig. I learned a long time ago that I'm not cut out for comic work, so I try to get the occasional cover job and fill out the rest of my time doing commissions. It's what I'm happiest doing.

No plans for another sketch book right now. I still have a ton of old books unsold. I needed to hit the con circuit to sell those things and I'm not a big con guest kind of guy. Thanks.

Can you list off all the markers you use for this, and estimate the time it took?  This is fucking brilliant, and I'd like to compare your eta with mine.

Thanks, G-Bone. I miss our chats, boss. The stores here are a little nicer and newer, but they have a shocking lack of Gary. Lame.

You first insult my "old" store (you know they kicked us out and we're in a new location, right?) and then you tells me you miss me--typical Stevens! :)

I'll see about putting Gary out there for a wider distribution!  You going to Heroes Con this year?  I'm pondering attending (haven't been for a few years now).

Holy shit, Nostalgia is in a new building? Well, at least you dont have to worry about the floor caving in or the roof collapsing on your head anymore. I'm sure you'll miss the turn of the century architecture though. It was definitely a unique feature to be located in a building older than then the country it's in.

Get to work on that. I ask about Gary every time I go into these shops and they look at me like I'm an asshole. It's as if they've never heard of you. Heroes is still up in the air. I'd like to go, but being me, I might not make it.

Only under threat of the city putting a road through our store did Charles move us--they bought him out and are going to make 10th street unrecognizable by expanding it and putting an overpass over the train tracks there.  Trouble is the new building is only three blocks away and in an old building that could use repair too.  The more things change...  I did love that old place, I always thought it could use fixing up, but the building itself was awesome.  As for Heroes, I tend to talk myself out of going every year--we'll see.  Good yapping with you a bit, though.  Take care.

Wow! THAT LAYOUT!!! Love the layer to the image. How'd you get the white lines from the rocket pack? They really pack a visual punch!

I don't know if this is going to make any sense at all, but I really love how you vary your textures with just a handful of tools... I really love how "scrubby" your cloudy texture is, for example.

Beautiful layout, too... your compositions always blow me away.

Thanks. That does make sense. I spend a lot of time with the textures. They're probably my favorite part of the process. Even when I'm tasked with working on a super hero, I find a way to get some crunchy textures in there somewhere.
