Supergirl red and blue by ChristopherStevens Supergirl red and blue by ChristopherStevens
Rejection..Yeah, it hurts. This one was rejected by the client. Only the second time I've had that happen. Not use to it...it stings, I won't lie. He disliked it enough to explain to me twice why it sucked. To make it worse, I don't think it does suck. I mean....I don't like anything I do, but I didn't think this piece was bad or anything. According to him, it's one of the crumbiest commissions I've ever done. Ouch.

Prismacolor cool and warm greys on vellum bristol board.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the composition, but her facial features  seem a little too angular.  I actually like the S-shield in the back, the rocket, and her basic pose.  And she's wearing my favorite costume of hers (minus the dingle-berries from the original 1960's version of the costume).

Maybe if she was flying the client might have given it some leeway?

Well I won't throw shit at the client - he's entitled to his opinion, but I personally love it. :) Nice interpretation of the character, I think that's what You expect from a true artist - that he'll make his art one-of-a-kind.

the critique sounds like an ass. yes, it's stylized, but if you look at any fine arts portrait, you'll see similar choices. just remember little people like to throw shit at giants and tell them their too tall.

the person who rejected it is a total douchebag... I mean, he has the right not to like it, but could have not acted the way he did >> they don't understand how much we get involved in a drawing!!! I would have taken it if it was my commish! you're awesome and you'll be even more <3

Well, I have no idea what your client is paying for his commission. probably a Hell of a lot more than I will ever receive, and consequently perhaps he has a right to be extra critical. But I'd be proud to own this image.

Well, all I can say about this commission, in the negative, that is... is that the face looks more mature than a supergirl is. Other than that, she looks great. By the way, I like girls with a lil bit of meat on their bones too. Really good job, man.

This is a great piece and that client comment really stinks. I've also heard horror stories for sketch card commissions during cons. I heard some will watch and guide the artist exactly how they want the pose...... ridiculous right? Some clients/fans just don't realize the hours and skills it take to create an illustration. This Supergirl commish has everything: action pose, anatomy, rendering.... and even composition! That's another job.... a graphic designer's specialty! So that client was getting more bang for his buck! Sorry, had to vent there for a minute. Bottom line, it's a kick-A$$ Supergirl.

Probably 'cause there isn't enough cleavage, but whatever, I love it! I love how fierce and in control Kara looks here, she's ready to bring open up a whole can of whoop-ass on some bad guys! Plus, your coloring is fabulous, I just love the muted tones, especially how subdued that red is because they work together so nicely. Great job on this, I adore her expression too, again, ready for a smack-down. >D

I have a very crude way for masking. I just use a square piece of paper. Sometimes, I'll tear pieces out to get the basic shape of a leg etc. It never works quite right heh. Laziness FTW!

Ouch, man. That sucks. I think the shape of her eyes makes her look less like Supergirl and more like a Superwoman, and I'm not really digging her puffy sleeves, but other than that, I can't see a thing wrong with it. Her legs look especially awesome.

Hey man, just found your work and i gotta say im really impressed. Im a big comic book fan myself, and i just thought id say number one i think the guy that commissioned you is f*ckin nuts. number 2 this is more of a request, you should do some of these marvel characters as black lanterns! that would be amazing! and you'd be the coolest guy on this friggin website. just puttin it out there.

That guy who told you that must have been retarded or something. Im curious to know what he told you, this picture is awesome. Foreshortening looks great, Focus is clear, Great composition, and anatomy looks good. There must have been something wrong with that guy.

As always, you've beautifully rendered this piece and I like the design elements that you've worked into the composition. For example, the "S" and the negative <ahem> "space" that you combined together.

Speaking of "S's", I would have liked to have seen how she might have looked with more of a cheesecake type of "posed" pose, and "s" curve so to speak rather than the realistic pose you chose for her.

I'm not criticizing and don't think this piece should have been rejected but I've often marveled at how, for example, how Pam Anderson can pack so much sexy into her photo shoots. She just knows how to pose. I see so many beautiful women in pinups that are even more beautiful than Pamela but they don't know how to sell it. They just seem to be sitting or standing there. Pam gives that little extra twist, arch, jut or whatever that enhances the shot.

Of course, I'm projecting cheesecake onto your Supergirl when that may not have been what you were gong for at all. I just enjoy your work and thought I'd offer another opinion just in case "talking" through the rejection is helpful to you. I constantly battle with commissions, always fearing that what I'm doing isn't as good as whatever it was that inspired the client in the first place. In your case, I don't see anything less in this commission compared to all the others in terms of quality so I don't think it was you or your work.

Hehe, no I don't do anything like that. I'm the pro in this relationship and have to handle things like a pro. He's allowed to be a certain way, but I'm not or it'll because it would only hurt me. I just took his critique, apologized to him for the disappointment and we parted ways amicably.

Yea, I agree. You're the talent; you have to have a good reputation. As long as everything worked out, even if not for the better.

I still think you should come out with an epic-long graphic novel of something. Your style is so ridiculous, I would definitely buy it :D

I don't think it's a bad piece, the costume is definitely not my favorite and the rocket seems to be filler, but the execution of the piece is outstanding as always. The pose is somewhat generic, but it's Supergirl!, it's supposed to be somewhat generic. The warm and cool greys are awesome. I like it, but I can understand why he might not have liked the piece, to each his own. No matter what you are a badass artist and a source of inspiration.

Actually I like the piece, as a piece of art it is awesome, what you can do with markers is incredible. I'd be wary to show your client one of my pieces, he would probably tear me to shreds. I think you're a great artist and as always, art is subjective. I'm sure you'll knock the next piece out of the park!
