Karloff as The Monster small by ChristopherStevens Karloff as The Monster small by ChristopherStevens
It's written in law somewhere that every painter must attempt a Karloff as the Monster portrait. I dont make the rules. I actually wanted to try this for years, but never got around to it. Now that I'm working in oils, it felt like the right time. It's probably too early for me as a painter really, but I had so much fun with it that I dont care if it is or not. I can always try again some day. I used the slightly less referenced Karloff photo from Bride. Did my best to channel my inner Gogos and had a blast. I've never used a black and white photo to create something in color. It really forces you to wing it and you probably come up with stuff you never would have of the reference was in color.

Oils on masonite.

Hehe, well I didn't really have a choice since the photos are all in b/w. It does free you up to be creative though.

I prefer to paint from black and white photos. I have a tough times with values. Nailing that and your painting is all fun. Loving the oil studies. This going to be little cheesy, but you should watch Bob Ross. He does teach a lot of great oil tricks for free.

Yeah, b/w breaks things down to simple values and makes it a little easier to read. I can totally understand choosing a b/w reference.

Bob Ross was great. I watched him all the time as a kid. I have no doubt his show would teach me something.

Thank you very much. I'm at the stage In my painting where almost everything I do is new and better than the last thing, so it's mostly fun right now. It gets maddening too, but that's all part of it.

Of course I had to do one a while back myself. It's truly one of the best portrait subjects there ever has been. I also tried a Lugosi Dracula, didn't turn out as well. Cheers though, good painting!
