Hulk oil painting by ChristopherStevens Hulk oil painting by ChristopherStevens
Here's my first official oil painting commission. I was very happy to do a Hulk piece. He's so flexible that he makes for a great subject with any medium.

As with all of my paintings so far, it was a real learning experience. Too many to really name, but early on I thought it was going to be a complete disaster and was relieved to not hate the results. Still a lot of things I havent figured out yet and the painting suffers for it, but one piece at a time. I can see the progress I'm making and thats a big motivator.

I love the colors that oils give, but I haven't figured out a way to showcase that in these scans. More than any other medium I use, oils get hurt the most by my scans. I wish I could share these with everyone in person.

This is amazing! Great job. You've really caught on to this medium. Can't wait to see more!

Also, Sometime photographing paintings looks better. If you have the painting set up straight and 2 light sources each at a 45 degree angle it usually does really well. I'm sure there are tutorials for taking photos of art.

Great stuff! Your characters always have nice dimension to them. I really like the strong highlighting and I have no doubt the real deal looks 100 times better. Do you use panel exclusively now instead of canvas?

Thanks! At the moment all of my paintings are on panel, but I definitely want to play around with canvas as well and have some canvas boards waiting for me.

As always, I love your work. You should consider getting a professional to photograph your paintings. It shouldn't cost very much.

Also, I can't remember, have you worked in acrylic paint before? I feel like your painting style and technique are similar to Dave DeVries. I'd definitely like to see a video of you paint sometime (soon? :) ).

Thanks:) I did a handful of acrylics a few months back before diving into oils and falling in love. I've seen a few DeVries paintings before. Cool stuff. There's a lot of artists who paint in a similar style that seems to be British in origin. Staples, Murray, Fabry, DeVries etc...It may just be the Bisley influence. Not sure, but I'm not sure where my painting comes from TBH. My favs right now are Jeffrey Jones and Sanjulian.

On your next painting could you take a couple process photos between layers/stages in the painting? It really helps me understand my favorite artists more and how they go about their work and what makes their art look the way it does. You don't have to take a ton of pictures, I don't want it to take up much of your time.

Hehe, thank you. Yeah, I had to mix that violet too. I havent found a tubed purple that I like yet. Paint is definitely a satisfying medium, but these are hopefully just the first steps in a long road. With any luck, I'll be embarrassed to even look at these in the future hehe.

if you get there, that will mean that you've improved a lot :D I know the feeling, sometimes I often laugh at my old "scribbles" so to call my old drawings lol :) I can't wait for this moment to happen, I think it'll happen soon, maybe next year :o I encourage you to go further in painting because there's a different feel.Something more organic (It's hard to explain) something which works really well with your art :o I prefer this than your inking skill but your copic markers are still my favourite ones since I discovered you thanks to one of them :D

Thanks. I wont be giving up on oils any time soon, but other work has kept me from them. Heh, yeah I think most people still prefer the markers.
